If you’ve read some of my recent blogs, you’ve probably noticed a common theme.
For me, real estate has never simply been about buying and selling homes. It’s about people, relationships, and being there for them through every stage of life.
One of the greatest honors I’ve experienced in my career is helping families during what can be some of their most emotional transitions. While I love helping first-time buyers find their dream home and watching their families grow, there’s another side of this business that is just as meaningful to me—helping seniors and their families navigate one of life’s final major moves.
As our parents and loved ones get older, real estate becomes much more than a transaction. It often involves difficult decisions, changing health, memories attached to a home, and conversations that aren’t always easy to have.
I’ve come to believe that one of the most important parts of my job is making sure no one has to go through that process alone.
One family that has stayed close to my heart is the Stone family.
About fifteen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Stone relocated from Hawaii to Winter Garden after being referred to me by another wonderful client. Together, we found the home that would become the center of their family’s life. Their children grew up there, grandchildren eventually came along, and the house became exactly what every family hopes for—a place filled with memories.
Several years ago, Mr. Stone passed away.
Over time, Mrs. Stone’s health began to decline, and recently she made the difficult decision to move into an assisted living community. It’s never an easy transition, especially for someone leaving a home filled with decades of memories.
When it came time to sell that home, her family asked who she wanted to handle the sale.
Her answer humbled me.
She said I was the only person she trusted.
Moments like that remind me that trust isn’t built during a listing appointment. It’s built over years of staying in touch, answering the phone, checking in, and simply being there when people need you.
Interestingly, this wasn’t an isolated experience. Just this week alone, several past clients reached out after years of not speaking because they remembered the relationship we built together. They weren’t looking for the newest agent or the loudest marketing campaign.
They simply wanted someone they trusted.
One thing that has always been important to me when working with older clients is involving family whenever possible.
Some real estate professionals prefer to work directly with only the seller. I certainly understand that perspective, but I’ve always taken a different approach.
When an older client is facing health challenges, memory issues, or simply feels overwhelmed by today’s real estate process, I actually welcome the involvement of adult children or other trusted family members.
Not because I need someone looking over my shoulder.
But because everyone deserves an advocate.
Having another trusted family member involved helps ensure everyone understands what’s happening, everyone has the same information, and everyone feels comfortable with every decision being made.
It creates transparency.
It builds confidence.
Most importantly, it protects the person who matters most—the client.
As someone with parents who are now in their 80s, I often think about how I would want someone to care for my own family.
I’d want an agent who welcomes questions.
Who communicates openly.
Who never rushes decisions.
Who treats my parents with patience, dignity, and respect.
That’s exactly how I try to conduct my business every day.
One of my favorite memories from years ago was helping Bella and Max, an incredible couple who had survived the Holocaust. They were well into their 90s when it came time to sell their home.
Early in the process, I gently asked whether they had children I could include in our conversations.
At first, they weren’t quite sure why I was asking.
After I explained that my goal was simply to keep everyone informed and make sure they had another trusted voice involved, they completely understood.
Working with Bella and Max was one of those experiences I’ll never forget.
Their stories, their resilience, and the trust they placed in me remain some of the greatest privileges of my career.
I’ve always believed there are two incredibly rewarding moments in real estate.
The first is handing the keys to a young family beginning a brand-new chapter.
The second is helping someone gracefully close a chapter that has been filled with a lifetime of memories.
Both require trust.
Both require compassion.
Both remind me that this business is about far more than houses.
It’s about taking care of people.
And that’s a responsibility I’ll never take lightly.
