The Elephant in the Room: Is Your Realtor Selling Homes or Just Selling Themselves?

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you’ve seen them: the high-energy videos of agents walking through multi-million dollar estates in Windermere or Orlando, microphone in hand, making witty comments and posing by the infinity pool.

I’ll be honest—sometimes I get a little “FOMO” (fear of missing out). I wonder, “Should I be in front of a camera with a tiny microphone, too?” But then I look at the data, and the reality is quite different from the “Reels.”

The Hustle vs. The Reality

Here is a secret from inside the industry: 99% of the time, the agent in that viral video doesn’t actually have that listing. They are touring someone else’s hard work to make it look like they are a high-end mover and shaker. While I respect the hustle, there’s a big difference between showing off a house and actually selling one.

When I’m at one of my luxury listings in Winter Garden, I often see these agents come through with their camera crews. They spend more time checking their lighting than they do checking the home’s mechanicals or vetting potential buyers. They are selling themselves to their followers, not selling the property for their client.

Real estate is a full-time job. If you spend your entire day editing transitions and picking trending audio, when are you doing the nitty-gritty work of negotiating contracts, managing inspections, and pushing a deal through to the finish line?

Don’t Get Blinded by the Lights

If you’re looking to hire an agent in Ocoee or anywhere in Central Florida, don’t just look at their follower count. Look at their track record.

In our industry, the truth is easy to find. If you ever want to know if an agent is actually “doing the work,” ask me. I can pull up the MLS (Multiple Listing Service) in seconds and show you exactly what they’ve sold, when they sold it, and what the final price was. Often, the “influencer” agents haven’t closed a deal in months.

What Actually Matters

When you’re ready to sell, you need a professional who prioritizes your equity over their “likes.” Instead of a ring light, look for:

  • Verified Online Reviews: What are actual clients saying about the closing process?
  • Direct Referrals: Talk to neighbors who have actually moved.
  • Market Data: Can they explain the local trends in your specific zip code?

You can see the difference for yourself by browsing my past client success stories. For more on the importance of verifying agent performance, check out this guide from Realtor.com on choosing the right professional.

At the end of the day, you want an agent who is focused on your front door, not their front-facing camera.
